The body makes vitamin D when exposed to sunshine, but the ultraviolet energy in sunlight can also cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles. Unlike other vitamins, it is difficult for most people to get the recommended amount of vitamin D from foods. Supplements are widely recommended.
